Academic letter refers to a particular style of expression. In comparison, the most formal writing all is found in legal documents.

Informal writing is fine for journal entries, blogs, personal letters, letters or e-mails to friends. Here are examples of informal and formal writing.

Informal writing: I think he is a loser.

Formal letter cause: the terrible choices of Macbeth that he will lose everything he holds dear: children, spouse, friends, and Crown King.

In this example, the first statement is informal. The writer speaks in first person, uses the word "I" and declares an opinion. The author presents the slang term "a loser", which is inappropriate in a formal context. He also used the contraction "it is". If this was in the middle of a paragraph, it may be easier to understand, to which the author quotes. Taken as a simple statement but it is impossible to know whether the writer thinks his best friend, his dog, or a rock star, is a loser!

The second example uses an academic, formal style typical of what teachers should expect at the university level. Written in the third person, leaves out the sentence references to the writer and the foci on the issue. Strong, specific adjectives such as "terribly brings" the view of the author clearly without turning to slang.
